Dervla Mulcahy | Printmaking & Contemporary Practice To me Connemara is a place to disappear and attempt to forget; leading to self-reflection —something unnerving. I aim to articulate a very personal, ongoing journey. I frequently spend extended days alone there, shooting video to document moments. The metaphysical engagement between an individual and this area forces one to consider aspects of the self they could not in other circumstances; as the sublime qualities of the location carry such an inescapable intensity. It is important to acknowledge that everyone has their own impressions and thoughts about this location. The space itself is in constant transition; with people’s ideologies deeply embedded in structures which will continue to exist and change, long after every person who occupies the earth. My current work is a reflection on how my ideas of ‘place’ came about through apperception and self-consciousness. This is a place that is relentlessly changing below, symbolically significant in terms of anthroposophy and allegorical alchemic processes. |
