Shane Cunningham | Sculpture and combined media
A musical instrument is perceived as an object devised for purpose as an extension of the human body and cannot function without its other body. Through the process of manipulation and hybridization of musical instruments and electronic media, my work interrogates the utilitarian hegemony associated with composing music and causes a shift in the sensorium. The musical instrument is dislocated from traditional constructs and explores new possibilities. A creation of sensors invite the interaction of the audience, their physical presence in the space engages and initiates the performative nature of the work and allows it to come alive. Relying on the sensory input of a person’s physical presence in the space Shane’s work reverberates throughout the space altering the atmosphere and complimenting the works around it. |
